Shining a Spotlight on the Views of our Generation in Oil and Gas

WPC YPC Survey

Since 2008, the WPC Young Professionals have captured their generation’s opinions through global surveys, hearing from those aspiring to have a career in oil and gas, as well as young professionals under the age of 35 that have already gained working experience in the industry and also senior experts.

From Madrid to Paris, Rio, Istanbul and Saint Petersburg, the Young Professionals Committee have delivered insights and voiced their peers’ perception of the industry at WPC events. Today, this knowledge is shared from different generations and acts as a valuable benchmarking tool for our peer group and those to come.

Network surveys serve as useful data collection tool, helping gather and measure feedback to make informed decisions. They call for action through a metrics-based and data-driven approach. Insights from the opinions of the oil and gas industry’s future workforce and young industry insiders can serve as a blueprint for the WPC global network and employers, while also becoming a starting point for (re)invention and innovation of programmes and policies in the sector.

Our research throughout the years has found significant similarities and voice clear calls for action across geographies, especially as the energy transition accelerates. For instance, respondents in 2017 demonstrated an increased sentiment of career uncertainty, as only 43 per cent of respondents intended to remain in oil and gas for a whole career; this represents almost 30 per cent less respondents compared to the first survey in 2008 that reflected on the perception of the industry.

To prepare for the ongoing transformation, career advice appears to be a critical concern. A vast majority of respondents (90 per cent) have not had a mentoring experience, which reinforces our dedication to the YPC Mentoring Project that fosters global and inter-generational dialogue within the industry and amongst youth.

Talent Attraction & Retention Survey for the 23rd World Petroleum Congress

In the 2021 Survey, “Youth Perception of the Oil & Gas Industry: Attracting and Retaining Talent”, we aim to gather actionable data on respondents’ relationships with the workplace and better understand our generation’s perception of pressing industry topics. For several years, we have worked to understand the drivers for attracting and retaining students and young professionals in our industry. We will leverage these valuable insights to analyze the trends and build our recommendations.

The global pandemic has contributed to transformational changes within the industry. The ability to attract, retain and benefit from the best talent to innovate and lead tomorrow will be of utmost importance as we navigate these headwinds.

Since 2008, the WPC Young Professionals have surveyed their own generation through global initiatives targeting aspirants interested in a career in oil and gas and a broad global range of young industry professionals under the age of 35.
